Director


Lani Starkey, a tax attorney and Certified Public Accountant, is the Director of Estate and Gift Planning at the University of Hawai'i Foundation. A nationally recognized charitable tax planning expert, Lani frequently speaks at national, regional and local conferences, and he has authored articles in respected journals, newspapers and newsletters. Finally, Lani is an Adjunct Professor at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

Lani's tax and legal expertise encompasses income, gift, and estate tax planning, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, business and real estate tax planning, and charitable gift annuities. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2005, Lani was Vice President and a Staff Attorney at Crescendo Interactive, Inc., a Southern California for-profit corporation. His responsibilities included teaching and speaking at over 30 tax seminars and conferences each year, consulting with nonprofits and professional advisors nationwide, and publishing tax newsletters and articles.

Lani received his LL.M. in Tax from the University of Florida's Graduate Tax Program. He earned his J.D. degree cum laude at Pepperdine University School of Law and his B.B.A. in Accounting degree from Southwest Texas State University. Thankfully, Lani had the good fortune to pass both the Bar and CPA exam on his first attempt.

Lani's legal experience derives from both the private and public sector. After clerking for a large Texas gas corporation, he was a judicial extern for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt and the Los Angeles County Superior Court for the Honorable Robert M. Letteau.

Lani is a member of the University of Hawai'i Foundation's Heritage Society and President's Club. Lani is also a member of the State Bar of California, Hawai'i Society of CPAs, Hawai'i Estate Planning Council, Financial Planner's Association, Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, and the Hawai'i Planned Giving Council.

Lani has strong ties to Hawai'i and the University of Hawai'i. Lani spent part of his childhood growing up on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. In addition, Lani's father earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. from UH Manoa, and his sister earned a bachelor's degree from UH Manoa. Furthermore, Lani's father is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hawai'i Center in West Hawai'i. Prior to moving to Hawai'i, Lani was a longtime resident of Houston, Texas, and Malibu, California, where he was an avid triathlete and surfer.




Michael Coppes, JD
Associate Director

Michael is the Associate Director of Estate and Gift Planning at the University of Hawai'i Foundation. He is also a licensed attorney, with 30 years private practice experience focused on wills, trusts, estate administration, general probate law, and advising non-profits on charitable gift planning. Michael's charitable gift planning expertise encompasses charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, business and real estate planning, and charitable gift annuities. Prior to joining the UH Foundation in April 2008, Michael was a shareholder member of Emswiller, Williams, Noland and Clarke, P.C., an Indianapolis, Indiana law firm founded more than 100 years ago. He is also certified by the Indiana Supreme Court as a civil law mediator, and is a former Master Commissioner of the Marion County (Indiana) Superior Court, Probate Division.

Michael received his Juris Doctor (JD) in 1975 from Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis. He earned his B.S. in Marketing in 1971 from Indiana University, Bloomington.

Michael is a member of the State Bar of Indiana, Federal Bar of the Southern District of Indiana, Hawai'i Estate Planning Council, Financial Planners Association, National Committee on Planned Giving, Hawai'i Planned Giving Council, and an affiliate of the Hawai'i State Bar Association.

Michael has old ties to Hawai'i and the Pacific Rim. In earlier days, he was a professional vacation tour director based in Honolulu from 1972 to 1976, working extensively throughout the islands, and exploring Asia and New Zealand for pleasure. He is most pleased to return to his "2nd home" to work for the advancement of the University of Hawai'i, the State of Hawai'i, and its people.



Jeannie Pinpin, MBA
Marketing and Communications Coordinator

Jeannie is the Marketing and Communications Coordinator of Estate and Gift Planning at the University of Hawai'i Foundation. She is responsible for donor communication, marketing, development, and project and event planning for the office. Jeannie brings past work and internship experience with university and community representatives, assisting with creative and strategic marketing, maintaining client database, and special event and program planning and implementation.

Prior to working at the UH Foundation, Jeannie was the Student Support Services Coordinator at Chaminade University of Honolulu. Her responsibilities included new student orientation and transitional programs for parents and students, training and supervising student leaders and mentors, and coordinating with various organizations in the community that focus on student support and welfare.

In all her educational and work experience, Jeannie enjoyed contributing and working with a diverse group of people. She believes in maintaining healthy, professional, and positive relationships to support client satisfaction and beneficial causes that serve the rest of the community.

Jeannie is an alumna of Chaminade University of Honolulu, where she received her BA in Communications in 2005, with a concentration in marketing and broadcast, and her Master's in Business Administration in 2007.

Jeannie was born in the Philippines, and was raised in Hawai'i while her father, a former U.S. Marine was stationed at the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe, Hawai'i. Jeannie, her mother, and brother continued to live in Hawai'i while her father served at various bases both on the mainland and internationally through the years. Having many opportunities to visit her father at his stations, Jeannie has built a love for traveling and a deeper appreciation for the world.

Jeannie's connections to the University of Hawai'i, though minimal, are still filled with a lot of gratitude and pride. Following his father's "military footsteps", Jeannie's younger brother is currently an Army ROTC student at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa with a full, educational scholarship. He looks forward to serving the United States after graduation. Jeannie and her parents are grateful for the wonderful, academic, and life-long opportunities the UH ROTC program has given her brother.
